SECURITY OFFICERS & SAFETY IN THE FIELD

The well known catch phrase is “Safety First”.If a security officer is not safe, no one else is safe. The primary components to remember are situational awareness, command presence, and deescalation.

Situational Awareness:

It is of paramount importance the professional the security officer remain in situational awareness at all times to be alert to everything within his/her sight, hearing and smell in order to appropriately respond when issues arise.

Command Presence:

Experience has shown that a command presence will, in most cases, alleviate or diminish potential problems before they begin. How an officer appears, stands and speaks is critical in developing rapport with those to whom the officer may encounter.Always address individuals in a clear, direct and respectful tone.

Professional appearance with a clean, pressed uniform and shined shoes presents the impression of one who knows what he is about and is there to perform an important function.A duty belt with all required equipment, pepper spray, handcuffs, baton and firearm, (if certified), in good working order.

Conflict Deescalation:

With safety in mind, deescalation to prevent physical contact with subjects should always be the goal and is to be avoided whenever possible.  This is especially true when carrying a firearm.A physical confrontation with a subject places an officer’s firearm at risk.Never forget, no matter how strong, fast or skilled you may be; there is always someone else, stronger, faster or more skilled!
