Skills to Be a Great Patrolman

How Can You Grow as a Patrolman?

As to any job, there are certain skills that will allow you to do your best work. For patrolmen, these skills can be similar to police officers, security officers, and other jobs that required the trained eye in this field.

Patrolmen don’t just hop in a patrol vehicle, drive around for the duration of their shift, and then head home. There are a lot of stops along the route that include different tasks. A patrolman may need to exit the patrol vehicle, observe and report, make arrests, and everything in between.

As for soft skills here are some we believe are great for patrolmen to use day-to-day and continually grow upon:

empathy
compassion
nonverbal communication
active listening
adaptability
building trust
critical thinking and observing
conflict resolution
work-life balance

Although the above mentioned skills come from an article called “Soft Skills You’ll Need to Be a Successful Police Officer” by The Balance Careers, these skills can also be used in other career paths as mentioned in the beginning of this blog.

If you are thinking about becoming a patrolman and don’t know what to expect, here are some core skills that were gathered by Job Hero that most companies look for in applicants:

Working knowledge of federal, state and city laws, statutes and ordinances

Knowledge of modern policing principles

Ability to keep accurate records

Ability to maintain positive relations with the general public

Physical ability to use of equipment and weapons commonly used by law enforcement officers, conduct arrests and provide assistance

At Guardian Protection Force Inc., we are always accepting applications through our website here or in person at our office.

If you are a company looking for patrol services, you can review our last blog here on “What to Expect from Patrol Services & It’s Benefits”. You can also fill out an inquiry for services on our website here or call our office during business hours.
